What is CA Foundation?
CA Foundation serves as the initial step in the Chartered Accountancy (CA) Course. It is designed for candidates who have completed their 12th-grade examinations or an equivalent qualification. To become eligible for the CA Foundation exams, candidates must fulfill a mandatory 4-month study period from the date of registration. In other words, those who register on or before 30th June or 31st December will be eligible to appear for the November or May examinations, respectively.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria for CA Foundation Candidates are eligible to register for the CA Foundation course after they have appeared in the 10+2 examinations established by law or conducted by a recognized examining body under the Central Government. Unlike in the past, candidates can only take the CA Foundation exam after successfully passing their 10+2 examinations.
Procedure for CA Foundation Registration
To register for the CA Foundation level of the CA Course, follow these steps:
Step 1:
Visit the ICAI website (www.icai.org) and click on the ‘Self Service Portal (SSP)’ tab at the top of the page in red.

Thereafter a sign-in screen will appear. The existing candidates can log in through their credentials. Whereas the new students will have to register themselves by clicking on ‘New student enrolling for the first time Click Here’
Step 3:
After clicking on ‘New student enrolling for the first time Click Here,’ you will be directed to a login screen. If you are a new candidate registering for CA for the first time, click on ‘New Students Who wants to register for CA for the first time click here.’
Step 4:
Before filling in the required details, it’s essential to read the ‘Important Note’ carefully. Please be aware that you won’t be able to change any details provided by you after submitting the form. Therefore, fill in all the information very carefully and double-check before submitting the form. After completing the necessary details, candidates should click on ‘Generate OTP.’
Step 5:
After clicking on ‘Generate OTP,’ a confirmation window will pop up. If you have entered the wrong mobile number, click on ‘Cancel’ and change your mobile number. If you have entered the correct mobile number, click on ‘OK.’
Step 6:
After clicking on ‘OK,’ a captcha verification window will appear. Enter the captcha text displayed in the image and click on ‘Submit’ to receive OTP.
Step 7:
After clicking on the submit tab, an OTP (One Time Password) will be generated and sent to your registered email ID and mobile number. Upon receiving the OTP, enter it and click on ‘Validate OTP’.
Step 8:
Once the OTP and email have been successfully validated.
Step 9:
After successfully validating your mobile number and email ID, the login ID and password will be sent to the registered email ID provided earlier. You can now use these credentials to log in on the next page.
Step 10:
Upon logging in to the SSP Portal using the login ID and password generated in the previous step, the student’s profile window will appear. Here, candidates should click on the ‘student cycle’ option.
Step 11:
After clicking on the “Student Cycle” option, the student module window will pop up. Here, candidates need to click on the “Apply for Foundation” tab.
Step 12:
After that, the CA Foundation registration form will appear on the screen. Carefully fill in all the pending details and make the requisite payment through the payment gateway. Once the payment is successful, the form will automatically be submitted for approval to ICAI. ICAI will inform you via email about the approval of your registration form.
In the previous registration process, candidates were required to submit the form to the concerned regional office, duly signed by the candidate, within 7 days along with the required documents. However, according to the new registration process, the form will automatically reach ICAI for approval, and students do not need to submit any hard copy of the registration form or any documents.
Can I Register for CA Foundation before clearing 12th examination?

Required Documents for CA Foundation Registration
For CA Foundation registration, you are required to upload scanned copies of the following original documents. Please note that only scanned copies are accepted; images captured from a mobile or camera will be rejected.
- The duly signed printout of the online successful registration form in hard copy.
- Attested copy of the Admit Card/Mark sheet of Class 12 examination issued by the respective Board.
- One recent color photograph (affixed on the printout of the online successful registration form).
- Attested copies of the following documents, as applicable:
- Proof of Nationality, if the student is a foreigner.
- Special category certificate (e.g., SC/ST, OBC, Differently-abled).
- The 10th Marksheet/Admit Card of the 10th class indicating the Name & Date of Birth.

Validity of Registration
The registration for the CA Foundation course remains valid for a period of three years. Even if a candidate is unable to clear a particular attempt, their registration will not expire. Consequently, a candidate can attempt the CA Foundation exam up to six times within the validity period. However, after exhausting these attempts or when the three-year validity period expires, candidates will need to re-register in order to appear in the exams.

CA Foundation Syllabus:
The CA Foundation syllabus consists of four papers, each with its own unique focus and objectives:
Paper 1: Principles and Practice of Accounting This is the first paper of CA Foundation, aiming to develop a foundational understanding of accounting concepts and principles. Candidates will learn how to prepare financial statements, compute accounting ratios, and solve basic accounting problems.
Paper 2: Business Laws and Business Correspondence and Reporting The second paper is divided into two sections: Business Laws and Business Correspondence and Reporting. The latter includes four parts: Communication, Sentence Types, and Word Power; Comprehension Passages and Note-Making; and Developing Writing Skills.
Paper 3: Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, and Statistics Paper three is further divided into three parts: Business Mathematics, Logical Reasoning, and Statistics. The primary goal is to foster an understanding of fundamental mathematical and statistical tools and their application in business, finance, and economics. Additionally, it aims to enhance logical reasoning skills.
Paper 4: Business Economics and Business and Commercial Knowledge Paper four encompasses two parts: Business Economics and Business and Commercial Knowledge. The first part focuses on comprehending the concepts and theories within business economics and applying them to solve straightforward problems. The second part aims to develop an understanding of common business and commercial concepts, as well as staying informed about developments in the business and commercial world.

CA Foundation Exam Pattern:
The CA Foundation examination comprises four papers, categorized into subjective and objective types. Here are some key points to note:
- Each paper is worth 100 marks, and candidates have a maximum of 3 hours to complete each paper.
- Papers 1 and 2 are subjective type papers, requiring written responses.
